about

Unused song from an early version of the Captain Cook musical: Omai, a Pacific Islander brought to England, became much admired within London’s high society. Nevertheless, Captain Cook was tasked with returning Omai home to the South Pacific and providing him with a house and supplies. This song is sung by Lt. Burney as he hands over the ‘key’ to Omai's new home on the island of Huahine.

The song fits in with the general album theme because it's about saying to someone, you've had a taste of fame but you must now settle into your house and go back to an ordinary life.

lyrics

CULTIVATE YOUR GARDEN
(Music: Tim Hunter; Lyrics: Frederick McKinnon)

Cultivate Your Garden
giving seeds time to grow
be attentive to reaping
rewards from what you sow

You’ve travelled ‘round the world
have seen some wondrous sights
been greeted by the King
and dined with England’s best
now you must do the rest

Cultivate Your Garden
giving seeds time to grow
be attentive to reaping
rewards from what you sow

Find happiness and peace
enjoy your lovely land
use all that you have learned
live better than before
upon this distant shore

You’ve sailed the seven seas
from north to south we’ve come
to bring you nobly home
hoping you live your life
content and without strife

Cultivate Your Garden
giving seeds time to grow
be attentive to reaping
rewards from what you sow
